Musicians & Stage Artists
Performing on stage can be challenging in many ways. The way we think and move plays an important role in making things either easier or more difficult for ourselves.
As an active musician, I have personally experienced how life-changing the Alexander Technique can be.
Performers, as F. M. Alexander himself experienced as an actor, often repeat movements and patterns in ways that may gradually create tension, strain, and physical difficulties.
In lessons, we explore together how to release unnecessary tension and move with greater ease, freedom, and efficiency.
We also learn to use more constructive ways of thinking that can help reduce stage fright and performance anxiety.
The Alexander Technique can improve your instrumental and/or vocal technique, as well as your coordination. It offers a new way of thinking that enhances clarity of mind.
The principles of the Alexander Technique may help you practice more efficiently, saving time, energy, and unnecessary effort.
And most importantly, the Alexander Technique can help you move through life with ease, clarity, and purpose, supporting you in reaching your dreams and life goals.
Ayelet Karni is a recorder and baroque oboe player. She began learning the Alexander Technique at the same time as she started studying the oboe, and this supported her greatly in meeting the challenges of the instrument. Through studying the Alexander Technique, her playing has improved technically, while also bringing positive changes to her overall well-being — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Alongside her musical career, Ayelet enjoys teaching the Alexander Technique and helping musicians and performers reach their goals.
AFTER
Here I am at 36 years old, recording a Sonata in C minor by Antonio Vivaldi in Waldenburg.
This recording was made 11 years after I began studying the Alexander Technique. I move with greater ease, freedom, and efficiency. Can you see the difference between the two videos in the way I use my body while playing?
BEFORE
Here I am at 22 years old, performing the Recorder Concerto in A minor by Antonio Vivaldi on the sopranino recorder with the Jerusalem Academy Orchestra.
I am able to play the passages, but notice the strain in the head, neck, chest and shoulders. This recording was made three years before I began studying the Alexander Technique.
What if performing could feel easier?
